Punk Suite (solo viola or solo cello)

As a fan of comic book culture and science fiction, cyberpunk has had an influential role on my creative thinking: dystopian futures that feature advanced technology juxtaposed with societal collapse, corruption, and moral decay. This theme is rooted in the New Wave science fiction movement of the 1960s and 1970s when writers explored the social impact of drug culture, technology, and the sexual revolution. Examples of cyberpunk can be found in almost all art forms: literature (eg. William Gibson’s “Neuromancer”), comic books (eg. Katsuhiro Otomo’s “Akira”), film (eg. Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner”), video games (eg. Cyberpunk 2077”), fashion (eg. designer Yohji Yamamoto), and so many more. 

When composing Punk Suite, I wanted to create my own musical portraits of cyberpunk and the many subgenres it inspired. My process involved researching each of these “punk” universes while developing viola/cello techniques that would best articulate the spirit of these worlds in musical form:

6. Dieselpunk
